Toddler Room Makeover!!

Picture
I just completed Nala's big girl room - I would love to hear what you think and I would love to help you if you are buying or selling a home!  Here is what I did in her room:
  1. I used a fun coral ceiling color as the main accent color - the color I went with is Lei Flower SW6613 from Sherwin Williams.  If you have read my posts before, you know I love painted ceilings!
  2. Then I repainted her crib and other furniture white (it was gray and cream).  Here is a picture of the crib before.
  3. I changed the light fixture to a chandelier I found at Home Depot (for less than $100!).  From a design point of view, I'm a fan of hanging fixtures or chandeliers in bedrooms instead of ceiling fans.  I like the way a fixture like this adds some flair and goes with the theme of the room. If the room gets stuffy in the summer, I would rather add a standing fan.
  4. I used an all-over stencil to create an accent wall.  I love how it turned out, but, WOW, it took a long time and a lot of patience.  I took some video of the process and will share that soon! Stay tuned :)

If you are selling a home, staging your home will help it sell for top dollar!!  It's true that neutral colors are usually best in the main living spaces of a home, but having a kid's bedroom with personality like this one can make your house more memorable.   Here are 4 tips for getting a child's room ready if you are selling your home:
  1. Declutter, declutter, declutter - Put extra toys out of sight in the closet, dresser, under the bed, or in storage!  For toys that are left out, arrange them in a cute storage container or bin and make sure that the amount left out is not distracting.
  2. Take posters and stickers off the walls - A few nice pieces of art or photos are just fine (and even helpful) if you are selling, but posters or sticker decals should be taken down.  If you are selling, it's also a good idea to take anything down that has your child's name on it. Remember, you want the buyer to picture their family in this space and not be distracted too much by yours.
  3. Evaluate furniture - Make sure you don't have too many pieces of furniture in the room and make sure the furniture matches or compliments the other pieces.  The furniture in Nala's room was actually three different colors until we repainted it. The crib was gray, the large dresser was white, and the small dresser was cream.  Painting the small dresser and crib cost less than $100 - we hired a friend who had a paint sprayer - and voila! It looks expensive and new!
  4. Paint - Make sure the walls are in good shape and freshly painted - most buyers will notice scuffs or a poor paint job.  The right shade of paint will make each room much more inviting and that will be reflected in a higher offer!
Are you thinking of selling your home? Staging advice is always free and one of my favorite ways to help my clients.  If you are buying a home, it's a good idea to keep resale in mind before making expensive updates.
